What is an Au Pair?

An Au Pair is a young adult, typically between the ages of 18 and 30, who travels from another country to live with a family for a set amount of time in order to provide flexible and customised childcare. The Au Pair, who is usually female (but not necessarily), functions as a “big sibling” to your child(ren) by becoming a member of your family and experiencing daily life in Canada.

If the Au Pair’s primary language is not French or English, they will wish to practise speaking these languages on a daily basis. In exchange, your Au Pair will teach your children the language and culture of their original country.

In addition to childcare, an Au Pair can help with basic housekeeping. Sweeping/vacuuming, folding the children’s laundry, tidying up after the children, and assisting with meal preparation are all examples of light housekeeping as the daily tasks of au pairs.

The primary responsibility of an Au Pair is to offer childcare in a foreign country while learning the culture and language. The Au Pair can immerse themselves in Canadian culture by living with a host family.

Why Should I Have an Au Pair?

Having an Au Pair in your house is like having an extra pair of hands. An Au Pair is an affordable childcare alternative for families with two or more children that require catered, international daycare. Some metropolitan families pay over $1300 per month for toddler care and slightly under $1000 per month for preschool care. Au Pairs get more one-on-one time than daycares or after-school activities at a comparable cost.

Au Pairs might have a flexible schedule because they remain with host families. If parents must leave the house by 7 a.m. for work, the Au Pair can arrive immediately, saving time on the commute. They have a babysitter at home if they want to go on a last-minute date night.

Au Pairs come from different cultures than their host families and are eager to learn about the Canadian way of life. Engaging with your Au Pair allows you to share your culture with her while also encouraging her to share her culture with you. When children are exposed to different cultures at a young age, they are more likely to learn about them later in life, It’s a fantastic educational opportunity since they’ll learn to empathise with and comprehend others.

Finally, the Au Pair and host parents collaborate to create a supportive and safe environment for the children. Parents can return home and spend more time with their children simply being parents because the Au Pair is caring for them and doing light housekeeping.
