Affordable Childcare

Finding childcare that is both reliable and affordable is a major challenge for many families—especially those with multiple children or complex schedules. Our au pair program offers a practical, budget-friendly solution that is becoming increasingly popular across Canada.

A major benefit of the program is its cost efficiency. The weekly pocket money for an au pair remains the same regardless of how many children require care. Unlike traditional childcare services that charge per child, hosting an au pair provides live-in support at a fixed cost. For families with two or more children, this can lead to considerable savings compared to paying separate fees for each child.

Childcare centre fees continue to rise, with some reaching as high as $50- $100 per child per day. When compared to the consistent and lower cost of an au pair, it’s easy to see why many families prefer the flexibility of a live-in arrangement.

For a detailed breakdown of costs, including the activation and placement fee as well as weekly pocket money, please refer to our au pair program information. Additional expenses may include a police check and a completion bonus payable after successfully finishing the 6-month program.

How Au Pairs Compare to Other Childcare Options

Day Care:
While some families have access to affordable centres, high fees—particularly for long day care. For families with multiple children, these costs can quickly add up, making an au pair a more economical option.

Nannies:
Professional nannies typically charge between $20 and $30 per hour, which can become quite expensive for ongoing care.

Babysitters:
Babysitters usually charge $20 to $25 per hour and may also require transport costs, meaning a single evening out can exceed $150. While suitable for occasional use, they don’t offer the consistency or flexibility of an au pair. In contrast, au pairs can often include babysitting within their weekly schedule or provide extra hours when needed.

Weekly Childcare Cost Breakdown

We understand that childcare expenses can place pressure on family budgets. Here’s an overview of average weekly costs under our program:

  • Weekly Pocket Money: $300
A fair allowance for your au pair’s contribution and care.
  • Completion Payment: $500
Paid at the end of the 6-month (26-week) program.

Au Pair Pocket Money Guidelines

Weekly payment based on role
To support a fair arrangement and preserve the cultural exchange aspect of the program, we suggest the following pocket money guidelines. These are based on the typical cost of room and board in a homestay setting. On average, homestay accommodation—including a private room and three meals per day, seven days a week—costs around $300 per week. After completing six months with the host family, the au pair is eligible for a completion bonus of $500.

Working hours and schedule
In a standard week, an au pair’s working hours should generally not exceed 35 – 40 hours. Weekends should usually remain free, aside from occasional babysitting, so the au pair has time to socialise and explore Australia. These guidelines are intended to promote consistency across placements nationwide.

Additional support and flexibility
Families are encouraged to recognise the extra support an au pair may provide, particularly during school holidays or when caring for a sick child at home. In weeks where additional responsibilities arise, offering extra pocket money is recommended.

Expenses and responsibilities
Au pairs are responsible for covering their own travel and setup costs, including flights, visa fees, gap year travel insurance, which will cover them upon arrival in Canada. Host families are responsible for any onward travel arrangements, such as airport pickup or connecting domestic travel, depending on location.
