5 Ways to Overcome Culture Shock
Moving to a new country
Moving to a new country can be the adventure of a lifetime, but this also includes unexpected things, like culture shock and nostalgia for our beautiful country. When this happens, it is important to remember that these sensations are completely normal and do not last forever. That is why we share some tips that you can implement to comfortably counteract this transition.
1. Make a list of the places you would like to visit.
Write all those trips that you would like to do during a year in the country you have chosen to be an Au Pair, from going to know the best places to have a beer in Germany or the best American hamburger. And then stay focused on meeting them.
2. Stay in touch with your family and friends
Nowadays it is very easy to be in contact with your loved ones at home and it is very beneficial to have that type of support. However, try not to spend hours and hours on Skype as you could start to miss important things around you.
3. Do what you love
Did you volunteer in your home country? Did you attend crossfit or any sports activity? Whatever you like to do, you should keep doing it in your new country. This will help you feel more comfortable, plus you will meet new people.
4. Stay healthy
Find the balance between exploring new dishes and getting the fruits and vegetables your body needs. In addition to integrating exercise sessions on a regular basis; they can even be walks with your Host kids.
5. Document your trip
Write a journal with the new experiences you are acquiring. It is a great way to work on your emotions, as well as helping you remember your year as an Au Pair more precisely. If writing is not your thing, you can try a journal through photos or videos.
And finally, remember that you are not alone in this adventure. You will have your fellow Au Pairs, your new host family, an Au Pair coordinator in your area and many new people to meet around you to help you in this wonderful experience.
